Commemorative Statue honouring Sir William Stephenson, A Man Called Intrepid

Inspired by our plantings and the story behind Camp X, campaign supporters Sue and Bryan Green decided that they wanted to continue to tell the story of this monumental location in Whitby, Ontario by erecting a statue of Sir William Stephenson.

Sir Stephenson was a Canadian soldier, spymaster and the senior representative of British Security Coordination for the entire Western Hemisphere during WWII (Source: Wikipedia). He had direct contact, sharing secrets with both Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill.

Stephenson contributed to the effort of setting up Camp X, a training facility for covert agents; which is said to have trained between 500 and 2,000 British and North American agents. One of these agents was Ian Fleming who wrote the James Bond books - for whom Sir Stephenson is said to be the real-life inspiration.

The statue, created by artist Ruth Abernethy, was unveiled Tuesday, May 5, 2021 in Celebration Square at the Whitby Central Library.

A teaser video can be viewed here. Stay tuned for a documentary that is to be released in June.
